Interventions to Support Emotional Regulation and Pro-Social Skills
SEL programs teach children how to understand and manage their emotions, develop positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These programs include activities like mindfulness, journaling, role-playing, and discussions about emotions.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)
THINK GOOD, FEEL GOOD
Is an effective intervention for children struggling with anxiety, depression, or negative thinking. This work helps children recognise unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and replace them with more positive, rational ways of thinking.
MINDFULNESS AND RELAXATION TECHINIQUES
Mindfulness practices, such as breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery, help children develop emotional regulation and coping skills. These techniques allow children to manage stress and anxiety.
MENTORING AND PEER SUPPORT
Peer mentoring programs and one-to-one adult mentors provide emotional and social support. Mentors help children navigate social situations, build confidence, and develop positive friendships.
THERAPUTIC GROUPS
Small group or 1:1 therapeutic play sessions allow children to share experiences, learn from each other, and practice social skills in a safe and structured environment. These groups may focus on anger management, conflict resolution, or improving communication.
BEHAVIOURAL INTERVENTIONS
Targeted interventions to address specific behaviours, such as using a trauma informed PACE approach, consistent routines and expectations, helping children experience success and build confidence can help them learn self-control and improve their interactions with others.
CREATIVE INTERVENTION
Art, music and drama can be powerful tools for children to express their emotions, improve their self-esteem, and develop emotional awareness. These creative outlets provide non-verbal ways to process complex feelings.
COMMUNITY BASED ACTIVITIES
Outdoor activities, sports, and community involvement offer opportunities for children to develop teamwork, resilience, and social skills in a less formal setting. Participating in these activities builds confidence and provides positive peer interactions.
